  • Four people in the Plymouth area have died while waiting for organ transplants in the past year — two needed kidneys and two were waiting for a liver.
  • There are 75 people on the organ donor waiting list in the Plymouth area: 61 of these are waiting for kidneys.
  • There are 153,066 people from the Plymouth area on the organ donor register.
  • Derriford Hospital's South West Transplant Centre performed a record 53 kidney transplants in 2006.
  • Nationally, a total of 7,234 patients were registered as waiting for a transplant on March 31 — eight per cent higher than a year earlier.
  • 3,074 patients in the UK received a transplant in that year — 10 per cent higher than the previous year and the highest number on record.
  • Countrywide, a further 1.1 million people also joined the NHS Organ Donor Register last year, taking the total by the end of 2006/07 to more than 14.2 million.
